Dr. Mary Ann Block
"Because of my medical training, my goal as a physician is to look for and treat the underlying conditions causing the patient’s problem, rather than just covering up those symptoms with drugs. I have seen and treated thousands of children from all over the United States, who had previously been labeled ADHD and treated with amphetamine drugs. By taking a thorough history and giving these children a complete physical exam as well as doing lab tests and allergy testing, I have consistently found that these children do not have ADHD, but instead have allergies, dietary problems, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems and learning difficulties that are causing their symptoms. All of these medical and educational problems can be treated, allowing the child to be successful in school and life, without being drugged."

The medications for ADHD work differently for children than they do for adults. For children they help them to calm, concentrate and slow down. An adult taking these medications will have the opposite effect as they will work as an amphetamine would and are very addictive. It wouldn’t be a good idea to take them unless your doctor does decide that you need them to help you focus. But your problem focusing has to be a serious issue that disrupts your life.

You shouldn’t be taking these drugs if you don’t have ADD or ADHD. If you can’t focus there are many things you can do to help that. You can suck on a mint, do yoga, exercise, or take a relaxing bath and go back to whatever it was you were trying to focus on.

I have a 14 year old son who was diagnosed with ADD in 2nd grade. I did everything by the book to help him through it. Put him on a 504 plan, took him in to see the doctor every 2nd filling of the perscription, monitored his activities.

What the ADD medicine does to you is more than make you loose weight and if that is why you take it in addition to focusing a little more than normal then that is wrong!

I watched my son loose weight so much that you could see every rib and his entire back bone. He would have emotional swings out of the blue and cry for no reason. It even made him act more distant than he already was with ADD. He would have severe stomach pains constantly. I took him to so many doctors for that until I found out it was the ADD medicine causing the stomach problems. We switched medicines to find him a better one that wouldn’t cause all of those side effects and we found one, but it was very expensive. Every summer I would take him off it and he would gain weight, be happy, and his stomach would feel better. When he got to 7th grade he decided not to take the ADD medince anymore and he has never wanted to use those pills again.

They have similar effects on both, but people with ADHD somehow get a "break" to step on with the meds.

ADHD meds are stimulants and will increase your heart rate, make you nervous and yes probably lose some weight.. along with other things.
