Dr. Mary Ann Block
"Because of my medical training, my goal as a physician is to look for and treat the underlying conditions causing the patient’s problem, rather than just covering up those symptoms with drugs. I have seen and treated thousands of children from all over the United States, who had previously been labeled ADHD and treated with amphetamine drugs. By taking a thorough history and giving these children a complete physical exam as well as doing lab tests and allergy testing, I have consistently found that these children do not have ADHD, but instead have allergies, dietary problems, nutritional deficiencies, thyroid problems and learning difficulties that are causing their symptoms. All of these medical and educational problems can be treated, allowing the child to be successful in school and life, without being drugged."

"Even when Ritalin is used as prescription drug, it may have severe side effects including nervousness, insomnia, anorexia (eating disorder), pulse changes, heart problems and weight loss. The manufacturer says it is a drug of dependency.
In June 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a series of public health advisories warning that Ritalin and drugs like it may cause visual hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, psychotic behavior, as well aggression and violence behavior."

2009 Oct 03 1There are always alternatives. Some of this depends on the age of the patient. There is adderall, effexor, strattera, and more, and there are also natural herbal remedies which are not evaluated by the FDA. Also, diet changes may help.

2009 Oct 03 3One way to help is to provide a diet of organic, whole foods. Children with the condition are often deprived of nutrients needed for proper cognitive function. The diet should consist of plenty of calcium (naturally calming), pre- and pro-biotics (beans, legumes, whole grains, fermented foods) which help make nutrients more absorbable, and omega fats (in fish, flaxseeds, walnuts, soy products, etc.).
Herbs to try are: gotu kola, ginkgo biloba, wild avens, etc.
Another thing that can help is exercise. Getting kids away from movies and TV and into the outdoors is a great way to provide them with an outlet for all that excess energy. Plus it’s good for them.
The underlying factors of ADHD are many (poor nutrition, birth defects, excessive TV, stress, lack of discipline), and because of this, it’s hard to treat. While amphetamines (ritalin, concerta, etc.) do work to stimulate certain parts of the brain while suppressing others, they do have side effects which sometimes aren’t detected until much later.
It can take a while for the natural remedies to start to work, unlike conventional medicine, but it’s worth it in the long run. Hope some of this is helpful.

2009 Oct 03 4Pollution and poor food quality are at much higher levels now than they were ten to twenty years ago, which is one reason I believe ADHD cases are skyrocketing. Kids’ small bodies aren’t designed to handle all that toxicity. Plus, parenting these days is much more lax than it used to be.
So what do I think would help? Discipline, a good diet, and (though not always possible) moving out of the city for much better air quality.

2009 Oct 03 6Fish oil……
Read this article and do some more research:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-391503/Fish-oil-calms-children-better-Ritalin.html
plus you should think about dietary modification….avoiding additives such as MSG and aspartame and perhaps the addition of some anti-anxiety herbs such as Lemon balm or avena sativa [oat straw] extract. And a calcium/magnesium combined supplement might help the nervous system, as might vitamin B complex.
Talk to a pharmacist first if on prescribed meds already before taking herbs….to be sure of no herb-drug interactions.
Best wishes.

2009 Oct 04 7There are some very effective alternatives yes - but be careful of any one ‘cure all’!
ADHD is complex - firstly it is defined by a checklist of symptoms and no one really understands what causes it.
Any approach need to be client focused and not condition focused as every one is different. The programme should be holistic, integrated, and contain an evaluation mechanism to see how effective it it.
It should help you set goals to define and measure what needs to be changed,, look at the emotional state, diet, exercise, core issues, negative patterns, dynamics, relaxation techniques, cellular support and how you best learn (which with ADHD is usually in nature, eco projects and with animals)
