Ever since i was little i was diagnosed with ADHD. I use to take medication for it. Through out school, which definitely helped.
I just turned 18 and apparently the whole process of getting a prescription has changed. I can’t just go to any Doctor anymore?
So now i have to go through the whole process again - iv moved house a few times and have lost all my paper work from doctors etc. And now i’m an adult i cant see a pediatrician.

PLEASE SOME_ONE,
*Are you perscribed and whats the best doctors i can see to make this process as simple as possible? In PERTH (i own a health care card) or
* Does anyone know the changed law/process’s to get a dexie prescription?? I know once you turn 18 its different, but that’s is about it….. PLEASE HELP.. im living on my own and i start uni in a few months!!!! :(
First up, relax, I think that kids r suddenly discarded when they hit 18 is an indictment of their pediatrician more than anything else. you pediatrician should have referred u to a specialist who manages young adults with ADHD and other illnesses. So can u contact your pediatrician for a referral?

Alternatively, go to a largish GP clinic, meaning a place with more than 2 or 3 GPs. There is a fair chance they have specialists that they generally refer to or they can easily ask their fellow GP for a recommendation. Even if u just end up seeing standard psychiatrist its a start.

Try write down your history, in terms of whom u saw as a kid/teenager, what medications you were prescribed, what worked, what didn’t, what side effects u had/hated etc. Don’t write a book, write it as a list and u can give that to the GP, then, with your permission, they can always try contact your most recent pediatrician for additional treatment information if necessary. Otherwise, follow up on the referral the GP gives u. ADHD does not magically disappear at 18, there is Adult ADHD. So don’t panic, just follow up and make a GP appointment tomorrow, or Monday at least.

IF you are more desperate and cant wait till Monday, such as suddenly without medication, try visit a hospital accident and emergency clinic, just don’t show up at 10pm on a Saturday night, go mid morning, take your MP3 player and a book and be prepared to maybe have to wait a while. In the interim u could visit the site (no association with me) and do some reading.
be safe, be sage

From previous years of my life, i had a drug addictions and drug abuser problem. Now since my adhd is getting so bad that my grades are starting to become F’s and my friends i am losing. Due to the inability to shut my mouth! please some method to convince them before i lose my whole life to adhd.

You really should be proud of yourself for stopping the drugs. If your parents won’t listen and don’t understand ADHD and it is disrupting your life. The best thing you can do is talk to your counselor at school. She is trained to help you and she is trained how to discuss it with your parents and help them to understand that you need help. Or a teacher that you trust can also help you. Don’t give up.

Also for support and advice there are numbers that you can call that are staffed by professionals who are available 24 hours a day. You don’t have to have an emergency to talk to them. One is 1-800-273-talk or 1-800-4ACHILD. It is obvious that you are a teen and this number is for you also. Please keep up and good luck>

Looking at options for my son, 9.

first make sure he is on medication. medicatuion is the only thing that has been proven to be effective with controlling the symptoms of ADHD.

nothing else has a long term effect because the problem is that chemicals in the prefrontal lobes are not getting to their places fast enough. so something must be there to help the signals reach their destinations and medication is the only thing that has been shown to do that because as the medication metabolises it keep releasing small and consistent amounts of stimulant drug to the areas of tghe brain that need it.

those other things are great but they are no substitute for medication
